Ukraine will obtain NATO membership through the Membership Action Plan (MAP)

Following the Brussels summit, NATO leaders approved a communiqué in which they reaffirmed the decision regarding Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance.

“We reaffirm the decision taken at the 2008 NATO Bucharest Summit that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance, and that the Membership Action Plan (MAP) will be an integral part of this process,” the document presented to journalists states.

The communiqué also emphasizes that Ukraine must continue reforms both in the security and defense sector and in other areas, and that the Annual National Programs under the auspices of the NATO–Ukraine Commission remain “the mechanism through which Ukraine advances reforms related to its aspiration for NATO membership.”

In addition to reaffirming NATO’s decision on Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance, it is also important that this decision was made on the eve of the meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia.

As a reminder, on June 12, 2020, Ukraine obtained the status of NATO Enhanced Opportunities Partner.
