Civil Society Organizations Call for Non-Cooperation with Pro-Russian Political Forces in Europe

On January 24, 2024, the president of the National Leadership Council of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party, Senator Claudiu Târziu, stated the need to annex Ukrainian territories, in particular Bessarabia, Bukovyna, and Zakarpattia.

In June 2021, it became known that the European Conservatives and Reformists Council (ECR) formalized the candidacy of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party as a full member of the organization. The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) is a European political party that has representation in the European Parliament with 67 Members of the European Parliament and significant influence on European Union policy.

In this regard, 12 civil society organizations from Europe and the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre submitted a joint appeal to Members of the European Parliament from the ECR, requesting a review of the prospects for future cooperation with AUR.

“The ECR political party has been and continues to be engaged at the highest level in supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggressors, and for this we express our deep gratitude. However, AUR’s membership in the ECR under these conditions legitimizes a party that holds exactly the same imperialist views as the terrorist regime that unleashed the largest war on European soil since the end of World War II. In this context, we reiterate our request to cease cooperation with the AUR party and, accordingly, to reject its candidacy for full membership in the ECR,” commented Serhii Kuzan, Head of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre.
