In the Ukraine Crisis Media Center the press briefing “Presidency of the United Nations Security Council or exclusion from the organization: what is next for russia?” took place.

On March 14 in the Ukraine Crisis Media Center the press briefing “Presidency of the United Nations Security Council or exclusion from the organization: what is next for russia?” took place.

In two weeks russia will start voting in the UN Security Council. At the same time during the last year, russian federation violated all core principles of the UN and started the war, to avoid which this international organization has been created after World War II.

“The Kremlin’s unprovoked war with Finland in 1939, same as in the case of Ukraine, caused a wave of mass protests around the world demanding immediate action from the League of Nations – an international organization responsible for world security at that time. Two weeks after the beginning of the invasion, on December 14, the 20th session of the Assembly of the League of Nations was convened, at which the majority of its members voted to exclude the USSR from the organization. The biggest war in Europe since World War II has been going on for more than a year already. Despite this, I’m sure that we all will see how russia will be excluded from the UN, as it was excluded from the League of Nations before. This time humanity should take this lesson.” – said Serhii Kuzan, the Chairman of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Center.

On February 24, 2022, russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine precisely during the meeting of the UN Security Council. Applying its right of veto in the institution, russia uses the ineffectiveness of this tool to counter its own crimes. On February 25, 2022, russian federation vetoed a Security Council resolution condemning its criminal actions on the territory of Ukraine. On August 9, 2008, russia blocked the adoption of a resolution on the withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia. On March 15, 2014, russia also blocked the adoption of a resolution on non-recognition of the referendum in the temporarily occupied Crimea. On April 10, 2018, due to russia, the UN Security Council failed to consider the resolution for the investigation of a possible chemical attack in Syria. Veto power in the hands of a terrorist.

“Russia’s participation in international forums relies on credibility. Despite the invasion and countless war crimes, it retains ‘credibility’ through its sophisticated use of strategic propaganda. That strategic propaganda – whether in Australia or Africa – exploits what Russia knows are our own weaknesses. We are fools if we don’t combat this informational and political assault on values such as those allegedly supported by the UN.” – highlighted Pete Shmigel, an Australian author, public and political activist.

On December 26, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called all the UN members to renew the enforcement of the UN Charter in the context of legitimacy of the russia’s presence in the UN, deprive the russian federation of its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and fully exclude this country from the UN. In the summer of 2022, the UN General Assembly at an extraordinary special meeting adopted a resolution on the temporary suspension of Russia’s powers in the UN Human Rights Council. Therefore, Russia’s presence in the UN Security Council can also be recognized as unacceptable.

“I recall attending a meeting at the United Nations headquarters dedicated to the situation with Crimea and the Crimean Tatars. There was a form, there was a protocol, everything was recorded and necessary reports were delivered. Was there at least some therapeutic effect from this meeting? I personally did not notice any. On the contrary, I was left with the feeling that it was a useless convention. When the future of the world is going to be decided, decided at the cost of the lives of Ukrainians, t1e1279he main organization that should ensure peace cannot afford to be dysfunctional and exist just because there is no other. It should change or disappear”, – mentioned during the briefing by the Director of the Swedish organization “Nordic Ukraine Forum” Alina Zubkovych.

Since the full-scale invasion has started, the public around the world has been demanding Russia`s exclusion from the UN Security Council. As the experience of Finland in 1939 showed, it was public action to draw attention to the actions of a terrorist state that became one of the decisive factors in the exclusion of the USSR from the League of Nations.

“The Czech Republic, where I moved to after the full-scale invasion, is a great example of a country, which should still fight with russian influence and which knows from its own experience what kremlin’s occupation looks like. Even a country, which has become a member of the EU and NATO, should defend its democracy. And it is public pressure from the Czech-Ukrainian pro-democratic community that plays a critically important role in resisting destructive pro-russian influences. I am convinced that to achieve stable peace in Ukraine and exclude russia’s influence on the internal political situation in the Czech Republic and other European countries, this pressure must not be weakened”, – said during the briefing co-coordinator of the Czech initiative Hlas Ukrajiny Anastasiia Signaievska.
