Following the Brussels summit, NATO leaders approved a communiqué reaffirming Ukraine’s decision to join the Alliance.
“We reiterate the decision made at the 2008 Bucharest Summit that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance with the Membership Action Plan (MAP) as an integral part of the process”, – the document presented to journalists reads.
The communiqué also emphasizes that Ukraine must further pursue reforms in the security and defense sector as well as in other areas, and the Annual National Programs under the auspices of the NATO-Ukraine Commission “remain the mechanism by which Ukraine takes forward the reforms pertaining to its aspiration for NATO membership”.
In addition to reaffirming NATO’s decision on Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance, it is also important that it was adopted before the meeting of the U.S. and Russia’s presidents.
It bears reminding that on June 12, 2020, Ukraine received the status of a NATO Enhanced Opportunity Partner.
